Bert's Family Feud

After a two decade long absence, five-time Gold Logie winner, Bert Newton has made a much publicised return to Channel 9 where he previously spent 30 years hosting variety television. Bert has finally escaped from the increasingly tired Good Morning Australia where brief snippets of entertainment were squeezed in between endless infomercials for products no-one wants.

Family Feud first aired on Channel 9 in 1977 and ran until 1984 then, after a break for a few years, moved to Channel 7 from 1989 to 1996. This time around it is up against the popular Deal or No Deal on Channel 7 as the two networks try to capture an audience who will stick around for their 6pm news.

The Family Feud format has changed little over the years. Two families compete to try to guess the most popular answers, given by 100 members of the studio audience, to mindlessly dull questions. One family guesses until they either get all of the answers on the board or they get three answers wrong. If they strike out then it is over to the other team for a single chance to take the points for the round. After the preliminary rounds, two members of the leading team play the final round in which they have to answer five questions. If they get 200 points or more then they win the prize money. The amount of prize money on offer, from $5,000 to $100,000, depends upon the number of top answers guessed by the player who goes first.

In the first episode of Bert's Family Feud, four brothers in one family competed against three generations of women in the other family but the real star of the show was Bert. Everyone loves Bert. His coolness rating has skyrocketed in recent years as he has learned to take himself less seriously. Bert is a natural as a game show host with his camp style and ease in front of the camera but he is not as young as he once used to be and in a failed attempt to hide this, was heavily made up and his hair carefully glued into place.

With Family Feud back on our television screens there will be many funny moments when the audience's most popular answers to a question are actually incorrect or when a contestant's mind goes blank under pressure and they give an absurd answer to a simple question but, no matter what happens, Bert will take it all in his stride.

 Date 27/05/06 Dear Sir/Madam I am writing to you to say how good your show is. Bert makes the show. It is a lot better than Deal or No Deal by 100%. The only disappointment is that I was told that I would be able to get Bert's autograph. Then during the break, we were told that it will not happen. I remember when Bert was on the Graham Kennedy and the Don Lane shows. I have been a fan of Bert Newton for over 15 years, and when we were told that we could not get his autograph on that day, and to be able to get close to your Idol and shake his hand, I was then disappointed.  I really love you and think you are so funny. My mummy and 5 year old brother sit down and watch family feud everynight. We just wish that the australian software version will hurry up and become available. We do play the american version but its just not the same. My mum said that I am too young for your show (i am nearly 9) but hopefully one day I can become a contestant. I do get a lot of the top answers sometimes beating mummy which is always fun. She saids you are a legend and you always make her laugh - she loves you too. Well done Mr Newton you ARE a legend.  I don't see how some people find Bert so frustrating or annoying; I think he is rather witty, and often laugh at his jokes. If he is so annoying, don't watch it. I am, like 'Truds', annoyed that there is no Australian version of the game on the net. As for you, Mr_Ed_and_Things, I think you are a vulgar creature.  Hi, firstly please let me say sorry to Bert and other members recording the show including those behind the scene. Sorry for the silly, hurtful remarks by some people in previous emails. I hope Bert knows how the Australian public really feel about him. He will go from strength to strength and so he should. Age should not be a barrier to how long one should remain. Now, the reason I read the previous emails is because I would like to find out if it is possible to audition for the show. I live in South West QLd as do my adult children. I am single and have a small disability which is an artifial leg. I would love to be able to have a go on family feud while I'm still young enough to do so. I hope that you do have auditions in each state as some have stated and not what others have said , that you have to fly to sydney and take pot luck. It is the only show I give my time to so hears hoping. Thanks for your time and regards to Bert . I will close in the hope that just maybe I may be able to have my chance as feel I would be ok as an contestant and I have 3 very smart adult kids. Also a smart alec grandson who is great. I felt the question "Name something teenagers might steal" was absolutely appalling and in very poor taste.  bert you should suck a stiff one because your show certainly does, rob bruff looked a bit sillier but he was a better host and you just plain suck. 20 to 1 is very ordinary too and i'm sure you know it.

 I love family fued. I have had the American version game on my computer & the all the family play it. Dissapointed there is no Australian software version or to appear on the show you have to first fly to sydney to be in the audience. Not everyone can afford to fly a family to Sydney. Love the show and game anyhoo !

 Bert you are the best. Sometimes when I was feeling dowm doing the same routine with the kids you would make me laugh on GMA. It is so boring without you, they should close that show now because you are gone and so is the humour. I only watched it because of you. I wish you all the sucess on Nine but you don't need it. Yourself and Graeme were fantastic I always watched the old re-runs of when you were together at Nine. My parets were great fans. You seen to connect with the young. When ever you are mentioned around a younger crowd everyone says the same thing you are so funny. Good luck.
