The Competition to be Australia's Brainiest
In a great week for game shows, two Australians, a kid and a comedian, were bestowed the title of 'brainiest' by Channel 10 for demonstrating their superior knowledge in the high pressure environment of a television studio.
.We all know that the concept of brainiest has nothing to do with intelligence and is instead a test of the contestants' ability to recall facts from the depths of their minds while under pressure. The kids' version of the show, featuring 11 and 12 year olds, was the culmination of a series of heats and featured the seven weekly winners and two wildcard entries. The comedians had an easier path to glory and went straight to the main event.
For the battle of the kids, Sandra Sully wore a frock made out of discarded curtain material and delivered the questions at a rapid fire pace. The air of suspense was heightened by her frequent references to the scoreboard and although she tried to do her best to put the kids at ease during the between round banter, for the most part she just sounded patronising. With so much at stake, the winner received $20,000 to be held in trust until they turn 18 years old, the kids were clearly nervous with quite a bit of stuttering evident, especially during the early rounds. The kids have big dreams for future careers in areas such as computing, music and even the noble pursuit of studying for a PhD in science. Not to be pigeonholed as book worms, they have a wide range of interests such as Lego building, stamp collecting, crystal collecting, music and the environment. At the end of the nerve wracking 90 minutes, aspiring computer engineer and expert on William the Conqueror, William Xi emerged as the most knowledgeable and was awarded the title of Australia's Brainiest Kid.
With the title of Australia's Brainiest Kid decided, our attention turned a few days later to answering an important question, "Who is Australia's Brainiest Comedian?" If you've ever wondered what happens when you put nine comedians together in a television studio here was the answer. Not surprisingly, they all tried to out do each other with funny lines between rounds. Sandra Sully got into the act with the occasional joke and took on the role of a school teacher trying to keep an unruly group of students in line. The kids were much better behaved than the comedians. The format of the show was the same as that for the kids and the questions were a similar level of difficulty. Comedians are a competitive bunch and they were all playing to win with some demonstrating an impressive amount of knowledge.
After eliminations in the first two rounds, Mikey Robbins, Bob Downe and Red Symons battled for supremacy with Mikey Robbins emerging triumphant at the conclusion of one of the most pointless competitions ever to grace out television screens. Channel 10 has had great success with the Australia's Brainiest series and there is more to come. Next up is, predictably, Australia's Brainiest Celebrity which of course will really mean Australia's Brainiest Channel 10 Celebrity. As for what will come next, who knows. Perhaps we will see Australia's Brainiest Footballer, Australia's Brainiest Game Show Host or Australia's Brainiest Current Affairs Journalist.
