What is it with Americans and socks?
Let’s face it, socks are an essential part of our wardrobe and, when used properly, bring great coolness, warmth and comfort into our lives.
One of the universe’s great mysteries is the American populace’s inability to wear socks with style. Surely it’s not that hard. To bring you the latest on sock wearing, Space Cadet embarked on a fact-finding mission to the U. S. of A. and will need intensive therapy to recover from the atrocities she witnessed.
In the warmer months, for casual and weekend wear, the American male chooses to coordinate white sports socks with runners and shorts. Space Cadet had nowhere to hide when researching this story. Everywhere she looked she was horrified to see white sport socks pulled tight all the way up to middle of the calf. Why oh why do they do it? Do they not understand how bad it looks? Even sadder was that the younger generation has been brainwashed by their fathers and young boys everywhere are stretching their socks to the limit. Occasionally, there was a sight so horrific that Space Cadet was scared for her life; white sports socks worn with sandals or dress shoes. Guys, a word of advice, please keep your sports socks for playing sport and please scrunch them down a little bit.
Girls in America have a penchant for completely inappropriate sock and shoe combinations. Sarah Jessica Parker has a lot to answer for; high heels and socks are not, and never have been, a good look. Space Cadet’s delicate sensibilities were frequently offended by the sight of mules, sling-backs etc. worn with socks of all descriptions. Girls, if your shoes aren’t comfortable, your problem should not be solved by wearing socks; go out and buy better shoes. From her in-depth investigation, Space Cadet can also reveal that American girls are also oblivious to the universal law of shoe style; fake tan and nail polish were invented so that we need never, ever show a stockinged toe or heel to the outside world.
A final observation from the U. S. of A., which applies equally to guys and girls is that; if you are going to wear long pants, your socks should not be visible – at all. The ultimate fashion faux pas, the too short pant, is an epidemic in America which should be punished by a hefty fine from the fashion police.
