Pirates Are The New Black
The fashion world is abuzz following the recent fashion week shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris. After a lacklustre decade with little to offer in the way of new styles, the Spring/Summer 2006 shows from the top fashion houses have heralded the arrival of an exciting new trend – pirate-wear.
In recent years, a few centimetres difference in a hemline or miniscule variations in colour and fabric have been big news in the fashion glossies but pirate-wear will eclipse all that came before it. Pirate-wear has universal appeal, it transcends seasons can be adapted for all occasions from day to evening wear. Make no mistake, pirate-wear will not be limited to fancy dress or underground subcultures, it will be seen everywhere – in bars and clubs, on the streets, in workplaces and in schools.
Pirates are cool. Their clothes suit anyone and can be mixed and matched, or even better mis-matched, for any occasion. At the fashion shows, the male models looked swashbuckling in elegant tights or a button cuffed pant teamed with white shirts with frill on their frills. For more formal occasions, there are luxurious velvet frock coats and vests, thigh-high black leather boots and, to top it all off, big hats with brightly coloured ostrich plumes. For women the buxom wench look is achieved with tight, tight bodices over sheer white shirts and flowing peasant skirts. Evening wear sees ample cleavage bursting out of elegant frocks with fully gathered ankle length skirts.
Pirate-wear accessories complete the look. Eye-patches, gold jewellery and parrots can be worn anywhere but be careful with a cutlass or pistol and save them for special occasions. For those who are prepared to go that little bit further to embrace the pirate look, extreme make-over surgeons are offering hand or leg amputations and the fitting of custom built hooks and peg legs.
Keep an eye out in your local shopping centres, pirate-wear will be hitting the shops soon. Be the first on your street with the exciting new look and start learning the cool pirate lingo.
