Celebrity Fragrances
It’s not about the smell anymore. It’s not about the design of the bottle anymore. It’s all about celebrity status. We listen to their music, wear their underwear and wear their clothes. Now we can smell like our favourite celebrities too.
Celebrities are big news. You can’t walk past a news stand without being bombarded by headlines revealing everything about the minutiae of celebrity life: weight loss, weight gain; eating disorders, skin conditions, legal and illegal substance abuse, relationships, the list goes on and on. In the past few years fragrance manufacturers have been jumping on the celebrity bandwagon to launch new fragrances. Sure it was all started way back in 1991 with Elizabeth Taylor’s White Diamonds but that wasn’t marketed to the young, hip and cool, that was for our mums and who wants to smell like a crusty old nanna anyway?
I’m not talking about celebrities simply appearing in perfume ads or the bizarre concept of a celebrity endorsing or being a spokesperson for a perfume, I’m talking about celebrities who develop and market fragrances with their name stamped all over it. We all know that these celebrities don’t go to university and get themselves a PhD in chemistry in their spare time then go off and develop the fragrance in a lab all by themselves, but how much input do they actually have? It would be safe to assume that celebrities do have some input into the development of ‘their’ fragrance. They need to ensure that their fragrance doesn’t smell like a cross between a wet dog and burnt toast. They tell the manufacturers what aromas they like then the chemists go off and do their magic then it’s back to the celebrity who tests out some concoctions and passes judgement.
Jennifer Lopez is the queen of celebrity fragrances. It all started for J Lo with the launch of Glow in 2002 followed by Still in 2004. Her fragrances have been best sellers and just this year she has launched two more fragrances Miami Glow and Live. Following close on her heels is new mum Britney Spears whose fragrance Curious Britney Spears which was launched in 2004 became an instant hit. Britney has just launched a new fragrance Fantasy. Then there’s the celebrity who is famous simply for being rich, the omnipresent Paris Hilton with her immodestly named Paris Hilton fragrance.
Other big selling celebrity fragrances are Celine Dion’s Belong, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s One and Two; Jessica Simpson’s Dessert and Sweet Kisses. Just this year more celebrities have joined the party with Sarah Jessica Parker’s Lovely, Shania Twain’s Shania by Stetson and Maria Sharapova’s Maria Sharapova and stay tuned for even more with Victoria Beckham and Hilary Duff planning an assault on our nasal passages.
So forget choosing a fragrance based your preference for a citrus, floral, woody or oriental aroma, choose your favourite star and daub yourself with ‘essence of celebrity’.
