One of the biggest risks to a web surfer's PC today is the sometimes overwhelming presence of Spyware, Malware and the like. Read our simple guide to keeping your PC clean and safe.

Keep your PC running smoothly and safely
Keeping your PC free from spyware is not really as difficult as it may sound - especially if you are non-technical. It's more a matter of due dillegence, thanks to the wide variety of free programs that are around to help you fight the battle. By following these simple steps you should be well on the way to helping to secure your PC:

Consider using another browser if you use IE (Internet Explorer)
While IE is the dominant internet browser, it's also one of the ones with the biggest security flaws. Because of its popularity, it's also the one spyware authors target the most. Switching to another browser such as FireFox or Opera will help you avoid many of the security flaws that IE exposes you to. Not only that, these browsers are often a step ahead of IE with feature enhancements. If you really must use IE, then it's still possible to keep your PC secure, but just a bit harder.

Download AdAware and SpyBot
Both of these programs are excellent for scanning for and removing any spyware/malware that may be on your PC. On their own they are excellent programs, however, by using both, you increase your chances of a totally clean sweep, as sometimes one can detect something the other one can't. Despite being the best spyware scanners/removers around, both of these programs are absoluetly free, so it's well worth your time to download and install then. Scanning is quite easy and you'll be amazed at what things are discovered on your PC.

A few more tips...

Besides the suggestions in the article, I would highly recommend Windows Defender, Scanning your computer with Shields Up, using a firewall such as Zone Alarm, using an anti-virus like AVG-AntiVirus, using a high encryption password manager like Roboform, and encrypt any private data with TrueEncrypt... such as passwords! I know, I know I am a little paranoid, but at least I have some peace of mind. All of the programs I suggested above are absolutely free. But when it comes to privacy make sure you only deal with companies that you know are trustworthy. images/wink.gif
