Console Wars: Microsoft versus Sony
The heat is on, Microsoft has jumped the gun when it comes to home consoles. The much anticipated XBOX 360 will be here before all others, is timing enough to beat the industry giant Sony?
Let's face it, Microsoft is one of the largest, meanest, gorillas in the IT software world. Thanks to its domination of the home desktop market, it enjoys unparalled consumer penetration when it comes to personal computing. Home gaming, however, has never been its stronghold and it has always relied on its third party developers to push the gaming edgde.
With the original XBOX, Microsoft was neither a winner nor a loser. While the XBOX never really posed a threat to Sony's mammoth PS2 franchise, it still managed respectiable figures in terms of sales and revenues. But for Microsoft, it was always about getting a foot in the door. Sure they may have had to loose millions, but ultimately, Bill and his fellow cohorts new that he who controlled the livingroom controlled the IT landscape.
Right now, nothing is certain when it comes to the home console. Microsoft has the edge with its XBOX 360, yet the real question is, can it deliver the goods? At the end of the day, the console technology means very little. For the consumer market, it will be about the gaming experience. Who manages to deliver the best gaming experience will become the winner. Right now, Microsoft is in the lead with the next generation platforms, but Sony will launch it's new PS3 platform early next year, and then, the battle is on.
